Drama of Works presents an instructional evening of theater for children (*NOT really for children). In between beautiful, innovative, large-scale shadow puppet renditions of literature by Edgar Allan Poe they use a toy theater cemetery to warn children of the dangers of misbehaving. The tales of The Raven, Tell-Tale Heart, Annabel Lee, and The Black Cat come to life spectacularly with DOW’s signature inventive shadow puppetry! All the while trick toy theater skeletons and cadavers inspired by Heinrich Hoffman, Edward Gorey, Maurice Sendak, & the Dead Milkmen get sliced, blown away, drowned, set on fire… Is everyone ready for a bloody good time?!?

RIPERION: Piano Creatures
riparian
/rĭ-pâr′ē-ən/
noun
1. One who dwells on the banks of a river.
Riperion
/rĭ-pâr′ē-ŏn/
noun
1. A world in flux, between land and water.
2. A puppet meditation made of water basins, trash, barge wood, and scavenged pianos from the streets of New Orleans and the banks of the Mississippi River.
Playdoh Puppet Productions presents RIPERION: Piano Creatures, a found-object puppet performance running April 9–12 at Den of Muses, 51 Architect St, as part of the New Orleans Giant Puppet Festival.
Built from salvaged materials gathered across the city and riverfront, RIPERION follows a group of “Piano Creatures”, beings assembled from discarded piano parts and river debris, as they struggle to make a home in the shifting batture floodplains of Southeastern Louisiana.
Inspired in part by Macon Fry’s They Called Us River Rats, the work draws from over 150 years of river-dwelling history, reimagining the lives and resilience of those who have lived alongside the Mississippi. Weathered piano fragments, once part of the city’s musical life, are transformed into living sculptures that carry both memory and sound.
Set on a stage of barge wood and water basins, the performance explores a landscape constantly reshaped by water, where boundaries between land and river dissolve. At a time when New Orleans faces ongoing water infrastructure challenges, RIPERION invites audiences to reflect on humanity’s relationship to control, collapse, and adaptation.
“Riperion is about learning how to live with water instead of against it,” says Playdoh Kolo, creator of the work. “It asks what we can build from what’s been discarded: materially, culturally, and environmentally.”
This show is sponsored in part by the New Orleans Tourism and Culture Fund (NOTCF) and the Awesome Foundation “On the Water” Fund.

presents Everything is Nothing
Happy Accident returns with a new puppet dispatch from our beautiful cultural sewers. In their new show, Everything is Nothing, your favorite Saturday morning super pals take you on another trip through the dark alleys of modern life. Picking up where their last piece-the acclaimed Vol. 1-left off, Everything takes us further into our fractured collective psyche and OH MY it’s a BLAST. liz HOWLS and Drew Simpson pull inspiration from multi-level marketing, health and wellness culture, Mad About You, relentless pharmaceutical commercials and abhorrent technological “advancements” to create a surreal garbage world full of glitches, easy listening and flat, functional lighting. It’s like a trip to the dentist without all of the annoying paperwork and anesthesia. Everything is fun. Everything is fabulous. Everything is what you want, when you want it. If there was a pill that would make it all go away, why wouldn’t you take it?

Plantain Futures
Butter Woman
Butter Woman is a life-sized puppet performance that reclaims and reimagines an African folktale once distorted by colonial retellings. The work emerges from the desire to preserve stories that center Black and Brown lineages, connect us to the Motherland and resist erasure.
Through Butter Woman, Plantain Futures seeks to restore dignity to this story and to honor the ancestral line of tellings and re-tellings that brought it. In New Orleans—a city unlike any other in the Western world because of its deep African roots and its capacity to hold layered stories—this work becomes both performance and ceremony. The puppets, worn by performers in the style of a play, transform human bodies into living vessels for myth, memory, and spirit.

“Cinderella” & “Charlie”
‘Cinderella' and 'Charlie ' are companion accounts of an intersecting tale. Together they outline the tragedy of two families from parallel worlds whose lives and destinies intertwine through a misbegotten love; setting in motion the dual blessings and burdens of legacy. In 'Cinderella,' a young woman invites the viewer to wander with the ghosts of her mother's romantic past. We meet Charlie and all the possibility he represents, daring the world to dream. In 'Charlie,' the ghosts of ‘Cinderella’ reveal a life all of their own. The viewer is invited into Charlie’s world, where the cost of dreaming is dire and the mantle of the storyteller is sacred and sometimes cruel. When the ways to tell a story are as limitless as there are ways to live it, sometimes it is simplicity which eludes our understanding.
A romantic fable in two parts told through large scale shadows, giant puppetry, music and marionette.

Water Striders
float
Our performance tells a story that is fictional, yet draws from our personal and the collective's experiences from Hurricane Helene. It interweaves the dynamics of several characters (humans, creatures & landscapes) in the process of reuniting with one another after a natural disaster. The themes explored in the story are of grief, loss, connection, magic, and the mystery of eternal unknowing. We find inspiration in zen koans, fables and the bewildering beauty that lies within every biome. Our intention is to evoke a sense of unity with the audience, offering lanterns of light while portraying the cycles of death and rebirth. We wish to tell a tale that is unique in its composition, yet universal in its essence.

present The Light Bearer
In 1310 Marguerite Porete was burned at the stake for refusing to denounce her book, The Mirror of Simple Souls, in which she offers a transgressively open-hearted and poetic reading of morality, divine love, and sin. The Light Bearer weaves together Porete's writing with events from her biography to create a non-linear rumination on light, faith, reflection, conflagration, and what it means to be a woman simultaneously trapped and freed by her circumstances. Unfolding in a series of short vignettes, this new work in development uses puppetry, sound, and movement to offer a prismatic imagining of Marguerite as both historical figure and poetic symbol.

Naughty Little No Good
Hymen Opus
Naughty Little No Good (aka Opal) is a puppetry artist working at the convergence of the surreal, sensual, and haunting. Their creative practice is driven by an emotional undercurrent and a desire to explore what’s tender, grotesque, and unspoken.
Based on the unfinished poem 'Christabel' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, 'Hymen Opus' is a psychedelic vampire fantasia dripping with sapphic yearning and, of course, orchid mantises. Layered with erotic tension and mythic overtones, 'Hymen Opus' pulses with an orgasmic energy. It’s part cabaret, part fevered séance, and part insectoid spectacular- a queered gothic romance drenched in lace, light, and blood.
